Understanding Skin Inflammation: the cellular dialogue behind tissue integrity
Skin inflammation is not driven by a single cell type or pathway. It results from a complex and dynamic dialogue between keratinocytes, immune cells, fibroblasts and their microenvironment.
In response to external stressors such as UV exposure, irritants, pollutants or microbiome imbalance, these cellular interactions trigger the release of cytokines and inflammatory mediators. When this response is not properly regulated, it can lead to persistent inflammation, altered barrier function and tissue damage.
How can we explore such complexity in preclinical research?
At Atlantic Bone Screen, we combine complementary approaches to investigate skin inflammatory mechanisms and evaluate the activity of therapeutic or cosmetic compounds:
🧫 In vitro models using primary skin cells to investigate cell activation, viability, cytokine release and gene expression
🔬 Ex vivo skin explants preserving native tissue architecture and physiological cellular interactions
🧬 Histology, immunohistochemistry, qPCR and imaging to characterize and quantify tissue responses at different biological levels
By combining cellular, molecular and tissue-level readouts, we can build tailored study strategies, from understanding mechanisms of action to demonstrating proof of efficacy.
