World Arthritis Day | Osteoarthritis is more than cartilage!
When we think about osteoarthritis (OA), cartilage degeneration often comes first to mind. But OA is a disease of the entire joint, involving complex interactions between cartilage, synovium, subchondral bone and surrounding tissues.
Histology helps reveal what lies beneath joint degeneration.
These images from our preclinical rat models illustrate the differences between healthy and osteoarthritic joints, highlighting several characteristic changes:
🔹 Cartilage degeneration, including proteoglycan loss and chondrocyte clustering
🔹 Synovial alterations, including synoviocyte hyperplasia and neovascularization
🔹 Structural changes affecting the joint as a whole
At Atlantic Bone Screen, we combine relevant preclinical OA models with advanced histology, histomorphometry and microCT analysis to investigate disease progression and evaluate potential therapeutic strategies.
💡 Understanding the interactions between joint tissues is essential to developing more effective treatments for osteoarthritis.
On this World Arthritis Day, let’s highlight the importance of research in improving the lives of people affected by arthritis worldwide.
